## How to pay

An unpaid GET returns 402 and a PAYMENT-REQUIRED header. Retry that same URL, with the same query, and a PAYMENT-SIGNATURE header. JSON is returned only after the payment settles.
Check /api/x402-health first. If /api/x402-health says payments are down, call without PAYMENT-SIGNATURE: Group B reads answer free with access.mode free. While payments are down, Desk, Network and bridge checks return the last paid answer marked stale:true with its asOf, for up to 10 minutes; after that 503 with Retry-After. Check stale and asOf before acting. A conversion (kind=convert) still answers 503. The stale fields sit outside the signature: POST /api/verify still checks the original body.
